What is Forest School?

Forest School is an inspirational child-led process, where children take managed risks in their outdoor environment, in order to build on their personal skills, social skills, self-esteem, and motivation.

In addition, Forever Green Forest School aims to support students in emotional literacy by understanding the different feelings and needs that they experience during the sessions. Together we build a toolkit to manage and communicate emotions effectively which can lead to stronger relationships and more positive interactions.

We also recognise the importance of nature connection in improving physical and mental health, building environmental awareness and a sense of community.

The Forever Green Team

Our fabulous team have a wealth of experience, knowledge and deep interests in alternate methods of education, the environment, sustainability, mental health and wellbeing to ensure we are able to deliver high quality Forest School provision.

The Forever Green team have a motto which is the very essence of what we aim to deliver: Knowing me, connecting with my community and caring for our Earth. This is expressed in all parts of our sessions and is shared with our children.

* C O N N E C T I O N S *  Sometimes it can be hard to explain how multifaceted Forest School is. This afternoon we reflected on the abundance of connections we observed during our sessions today and how important they are. Connection is a deep and intrinsic need for every one of us. We witnessed children connecting to nature in meaningful ways; watching creatures closely, learning about them and showing care for them. We observed many different human connections; children lying in the grass and chatting, communicating whilst building a den, cooperating during a digging project and collaborating artistically.  With our older group, we noticed moments where children were connecting with themselves; through mindful moments, learning something about themselves in a team game and discovering positive traits about themselves during their chosen activities. * B E E S * This Saturday, 20th May, marks World Bee Day. The day was created to raise awareness of the importance of bees and the increasing threat against them, as well as celebrating the wonder of them. The theme this year is “Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production” to focus on ways to garden and farm using less harmful substances. We have been talking a lot about bees this week and the children have chosen different ways to connect with bees; from planting pollinator-friendly plants, making seed bombs to take home, learning more about bees from some lovely books, creating bees out of alder and pine cones and making mini bee homes for solitary bees. * P O N D  L I F E *  We built this pond at one of our school sites three ago. It has developed year by year and we are always excited to see what pond life is existing there. This week, we cleared some blanket weed which was beginning to take over and did some pond dipping with our reception group. They were fascinated with what we found. Our discoveries included water boatmen, ramshorn snails, mayfly larvae and a damselfly! Lots of children have enjoyed reading 'Helga the Hedgehog' by Emma Livingstone. It contains fun facts and is beautifully written in a rhyming story form. The book is dedicated to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital - a free wildlife hospital which treats sick and injured British wildlife including hedgehogs. **MEDICINAL FORAGING & FOREST BATHING** This weekend we had the privilege to join @maria_sprostranova and @gerhardt.janine as we connected with nature and opened our minds to the healing power of the wild plants around us. A day of knowledge and relaxation to feed our souls not to mention the joy of gathering a multitude of leaves and flowers for our salad and soup. Thank you to the the nettle, dead nettle, cleaver, bramble, hawthorn, dandelion, plantain and three cornered leek that we foraged on our way to basecamp where we enjoyed the most divine lunch! The healing, revitalising power of nature, particularly trees, is the greatest gift 💚 Thank you Maria and Janine for the opportunity to connect and learn.

* D I G G I N G *  Throughout all our sites, whatever the age, the children we work with LOVE digging! Due to the level of interest in this activity, we have decided to create stag beetle loggeries which require a significant amount of digging. While we have been observing this interest, we have been considering what the pull of this activity is for the children. So far we have discovered that there appears to be an innate need to explore and discover (in particular, the younger children enjoy the discovery of 'treasures'), there is often a strong sense of camaraderie and joint purpose (e.g. trying to remove a particular stubborn rock), they are overcoming obstacles and creating something together. We feel that most children we have observed experience an increased level of motivation as they witness their hole getting bigger and, perhaps, this gives children a practical representation of their strength and power as the hole gets wider and deeper. We would really like to learn more about this! We will continue to observe the digging and see what else we discover.
